Fundamentals of Casino Roulette
The word “roulette” comes from the French “roulette” and means “wheel”. It consists of three elements: The wheel, the mat and the ball.
The wheel is a round mechanism with squares on its edge and engraved numbers: some in red, others in black. The zero or double zero squares of the European or American roulette respectively, are green. The wheel is balanced to guarantee random results in each round. In virtual roulette, the image of the wheel appears on the screen of your computer or smartphone.
The mat is the cloth on the roulette table, with boxes of numbers, colors and par-impar combinations that match those on the wheel. The betting chips are placed on the mat. The mat has three zones: the central zone, where the simple numbers or internal bets are.
The outside field, at the margin of the central zone, where the external bets are placed: the numbers 1-18 and 19-36, even and odd, red and black. The lower outer field contains three betting columns for all the numbers in each column.
The ball is a white Teflon sphere, two centimetres in diameter, which the croupier spins on the wheel. When the ball falls into one of the squares corresponding to a number, it is considered the winner. In online roulette, the ball rolls through a computerized and safe process of random result.
Roulette Betting and Payments
The betting payments are provided on the mat. Bets on the combination of numbers, colors and par-impar on which the card is placed. Your payments are proportional to the value of the chips and their position on the table. But as a general notion of the game: the higher the probability of winning, the lower the winnings.
What Does a Good Roulette Player Think About?
A good roulette player is a balance between strategist and dreamer. While fortune is inevitable, a good betting strategy increases your odds of winning.
As a roulette strategist, your betting system is based on a balance between betting zones, calculating your moves between the boxes with the highest payout ratio (such as direct bets) and minimizing those that pay you the least (such as color betting). As a dreamer, you also bet on your favorite numbers. The truth is that every good roulette player develops and practices his own strategies.
Test the strategist inside you, while leaving the emotion of the result to the destination. Try your strategies in online roulette.
The Origins of Roulette
Perhaps roulette was born in China and reached Europe via trade routes, as was pasta with Marco Polo. Or maybe it was the Romans who bet between battles, turning the wheels of their carts sideways. There are even signs, though nebulous, of its appearance as a game of chance in the Middle Ages.
The most recent and proven history owes its creation to Blaise Pascal, a 17th century French mathematician obsessed with perpetual motion machines and the randomness of events. At that time, he devised a roulette wheel in total balance with thirty-six numbers that he probably turned into a game of chance when he shared it with his circle of friends.
This casino roulette game premiered in 1796 in Paris, but in 1842, the French twins François and Louis Blanc added to the wheel the “0” box, to ensure an advantage for the casino. This is the current roulette, with a 1/37 chance to hit and win 36 times the bet, getting a margin for the house of 2.7%.
In the early 1880s, roulette arrived in North America, where double zero was added to double the odds of winning for the casino, i.e. 2/38 or 5.26%. Roulette was popular until the Second World War, but American players migrated to Blackjack because of their higher odds of beating the house.
Today, electronic roulette is a chapter still being written in the history channels of online casinos.
